MIAMI — On the brink of elimination from the playoff race, the Pittsburgh Steelers averted a fourth-quarter collapse to extend their season.

It ended three hours later.

The reigning Super Bowl champions sent two Miami quarterbacks to the sideline, including Pat White with a scary head injury, and beat the Dolphins 30-24 Sunday. But Pittsburgh (9-7) was eliminated when Baltimore clinched an AFC wild-card berth by winning at Oakland, 21-13.

"I'd rather we go out with a win than a loss," said Ben Roethlisberger, who threw three touchdown passes.

The Dolphins (7-9), who won the AFC East last season, were eliminated with 2 minutes left in their game when Houston beat New England. The Dolphins spent much of the season trying to recover from an 0-3 start, climbed above .500 for the first time at 7-6, then lost their final three games.

Their drought without a playoff win is now nine seasons long.

"I told the team 7-9 is mediocre, and mediocrity is not going to be accepted here," second-year coach Tony Sparano said.

Pittsburgh was undone by losses to the woeful Chiefs, Raiders and Browns in a span of 19 days during a late-season five-game losing streak.

"We didn't do what we were supposed to do and take care of our business," receiver Santonio Holmes said. "Therefore we have to suffer with what happens."

Plenty of Steelers fans stayed with their team until the end. Many in the stadium wore black and gold, and the visiting team provided lots to cheer about.

LaMarr Woodley led the defensive charge with two sacks, two tackles for a loss and three quarterback hurries. Rashard Mendenhall ran for 94 yards and Willie Parker added 91.

But the crowd grew silent when White was carted off the field with a head injury following a helmet-to-helmet collision with cornerback Ike Taylor. White moved his arms and legs before leaving the field after an eight-minute delay, and he was taken to a hospital for examination.

A source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that White suffered a concussion.

"I told him, 'I hope you feel better, man,'" said Taylor, who was unhurt. "You never want to see a guy down like that. He kept repeating, 'Thanks,' and I just kept telling him to get better."

Miami starter Chad Henne sat out the second half with an eye injury that blurred his vision, and when the rookie White departed with 2 minutes left in the third quarter, Tyler Thigpen made his first appearance for the Dolphins.

They trailed 27-10 before Thigpen led touchdown drives on his first two series.

"It irritates the heck out of you," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "But I didn't sense a great deal of panic. The guys made the necessary plays to keep us in it."

With 6 minutes left and the score 27-24, Joey Porter recovered Roethlisberger's fumble on a sack at the Steelers 13 to give Miami a chance to take the lead. But Thigpen was intercepted by Ryan Clark at the 2.

Roethlisberger appeared to favor his throwing arm during the next possession, but he led Pittsburgh on a 14-play, 83-yard drive. It ended with Jeff Reed's third field goal for a 30-24 lead with 40 seconds left.

Taylor intercepted Thigpen on Miami's next play to seal the outcome.

"Unlucky there at the end throwing two interceptions," Thigpen said. "Both I would like to get back."

The Steelers never had to turn to their backup quarterback, but Roethlisberger said he needed to see a doctor after the game. He declined to discuss his injury.

Pittsburgh found some consolation in winning its final three games after the five-game skid.

"There are a lot of teams that are capable of going 6-10 facing the circumstances this group was faced with," Tomlin said. "They knuckled down, they hung together. They did the best of their ability to fix it. We won the last three ball games and gave ourselves a chance."

Roethlisberger finished with 26 touchdown passes by throwing for scores covering 5 yards to Holmes, 54 yards to Mike Wallace and 3 yards to Heath Miller. Roethlisberger passed for 220 yards and ended the season at 4,328.

The Steelers added 202 yards rushing, held Ricky Williams to 31 and came up with three interceptions.

"We finished the season the way we were supposed to," Holmes said.

Game notes
Miami CB Vontae Davis left the game in the first half with a left wrist injury. … Steelers safety Troy Polamalu (knee) was again inactive. … LB Jason Taylor became the fourth Dolphins player to start a game in three decades. … Miami FB Lousaka Polite was successful in his only third-down carry to finish 16 for 16 on third- and fourth-down conversions.

PITTSBURGH — Jeff Reed's 38-yard field goal put Pittsburgh ahead with 5:25 remaining and the Steelers finally managed to hold a fourth-quarter lead, beating division rival Baltimore 23-20 on Sunday to remain in playoff contention and further jumble the AFC postseason race.

The Steelers (8-7), their season seemingly ended by a late-season five-game losing streak, won their second in a row and will go into the final weekend of the season with a chance to sneak into the playoffs if they win at Miami and get some help.

Joe Flacco threw two touchdown passes to Todd Heap, but the Ravens (8-7) — who could have clinched a wild-card spot with a victory and losses by two other contenders — face a win-or-else game at Oakland next Sunday although they retain the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Steelers.

Pittsburgh has lost six leads in the final quarter during a season marked by victories over contenders San Diego, Baltimore, Minnesota, Green Bay and Denver and losses to the Chiefs, Raiders and Browns, but held on to win as Reed kicked three field goals and Rashard Mendenhall ran for a touchdown.

Baltimore had a chance late, but rookie defensive end Ziggy Hood — who earlier got his first NFL sack — recovered Flacco's fumble on a fourth-and-10 play from the Steelers 39 with 2:27 to play. After that, an apparent interception thrown by Ben Roethlisberger was wiped out by an illegal contact penalty on cornerback Frank Walker and Pittsburgh ran out the clock.

Ray Rice ran for 141 yards to end Pittsburgh's 33-game streak of not allowing a 100-yard rusher, but Baltimore still lost its fifth game by a margin of six points or fewer.

The Ravens were repeatedly hurt by their own mistakes in their ninth loss in their last 10 in Pittsburgh, counting the playoffs.

They wiped out a 20-10 Pittsburgh lead by retaining the ball for all but 2 1/2 minutes of the third quarter, but they had two touchdowns called back by penalties. And a wide-open Derrick Mason, their most reliable receiver, dropped a certain touchdown pass in the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter when the ball clanked off his face mask, preventing the Ravens from going ahead 27-20.

Roethlisberger followed up his 503-yard game against Green Bay by going 17 of 33 for 259 yards, including a 24-yard TD pass to Santonio Holmes that ended a 94-yard drive in the final two minutes of the first half and made it 20-10. Roethlisberger became the first 4,000-yard passer in the franchise's 76-year history — he has 4,108 yards — and Mendenhall went over 1,000 yards rushing by gaining 36 yards. He has 1,014 yards.

Flacco came back to start the second half by hitting Heap for 7 yards to end a 64-yard drive that featured Rice's 15-yard run and his 14-yard catch, and Domonique Foxworth's interception of Roethlisberger's pass led to Billy Cundiff's 35-yard field goal and a 20-all tie.

The Steelers, their season revived by the last-second 37-36 victory over Green Bay the week before, had responded to Heap's first scoring catch — a 30-yarder — by driving nearly the length of the field in 85 seconds. Roethlisberger found Mike Wallace — the star of the Green Bay game with two TD catches — for 45 yards on third-and-12 and Heath Miller for 19 yards on the next play ahead of the Holmes scoring catch.

Ben Roethlisberger led a Super Bowl-like 86-yard drive in the final two minutes that ended with no time left when Mike Wallace caught a 19-yard touchdown pass as the Steelers beat Green Bay 37-36.

Wallace's catch even mimicked the one Santonio Holmes made to win Super Bowl XLIII in February.

Jeff Reed's extra point kick provided the winning margin.

The victory ended a five-game losing streak and raised the Steelers record to 7-7. Green Bay's five-game winning streak ended and the Packers are now 9-5.

Roethlisberger passed for a team-record 503 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

The winning touchdown came after Steelers coach Mike Tomlin's decision to try an onsides kick with a two-point lead and four minutes left in the game blew up in the Steelers' face.

The Packers took over at the Steelers' 39 after the botched onside kick try and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:06 left, 36-30.

Cornerback Ike Taylor touched the onsides kick attempt before it traveled 10 yards, which is illegal and gave the ball to Green Bay at the Steelers' 39. It took the Packers six plays before Aaron Rogers threw his third touchdown pass, of 24 yards to James Jones. The Packers were successful on the two-point conversion.

The Steelers took over at their 14 after a bobbled kickoff return with 2:06 left and moved 86 yards on 12 plays for the winning score.

The Steelers took a 24-14 lead into the fourth quarter of tonight's game against Green Bay at Heinz Field.

Jeff Reed kicked a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter to put the Steelers up by 10. The score came after a 14-yard touchdown pass on a screen to Rashard Mendenhall was nullified because Heath Miller blocked on it too soon, drawing a pass interference penalty.

Each team scored a touchdown in the second quarter.

Aaron Rodgers scrambled for a 14-yard touchdown to lift Green Bay into a 14-14 tie.

The Steelers responded with an 80-yard drive, capped by Ben Roethlisberger's 10-yard touchdown pass to Mewelde Moore with 26 seconds to go I the half.

The Steelers struck on their first play of the game on offense when Ben Roethlisberger threw deep to Mike Wallace for a 60-yard touchdown.

Green Bay responded with one of its own as Aaron Rodgers tossed an 83-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings, who caught it at the 50, avoided a tackle and outran the Steelers to the end zone.

Rashard Mendenhall put the Steelers back on top 14-7 with a two-yard touchdown run.
